Mr. Bubble

Inking a New Chapter for an Iconic Bathtime Character

Role: Creative Director, Copywriter

Everyone’s trying to write the great American novel, but everyone and their mother is actually a children’s-book author these days. And I’m no different.

The team at Mr. Bubble, the iconic children’s bathtime brand, wanted to make a splash (har har) around National Bubble Bath Day and create a new occasion for parents and kids to enjoy bubble-bath products.

They approached us to create a story series that introduced young readers and their parents to a new superhero alter ego: Mighty Bubble.

In addition to writing one fully realized story, I also developed additional plotlines and a storytelling rubric that fit the classic children’s-book style.

My story was illustrated and printed into a small chapbook, which was included on-pack with bottles of Mr. Bubble at major retailers like Target and Kroger nationwide. Its launch on National Bubble Bath Day also sparked social interest among Mr. Bubble’s followers.

And how did it work as my debut as a children’s writer? Surprisingly well: A comics blogger wrote a review and had some nice things to say about the book, and I occasionally get unprompted Facebook messages from people who say they liked "Mighty Bubble and the Moontastic Mess." Still waiting on my Newbery Medal, though.
